Leaking Ballast Tank???

Does anyone have a number I can call for some advise ... there are no Hunter dealers here. There used to be a 1-800 number we could call at Hunter's and speak to Greg Emerson but that is out of service. My boat is a '94 H26. My problem is that I am getting huge amounts of water seeping into the aft bildge from the area under the teak sole area in front of the head. This past week-end we were out in some good winds and there was so much water collected that it ran into the storage compartments forward. The water seems to appear only while there is excessive movement of the boat. I'm relatively sure that the water is originating from the ballast tanks as it has a red or brackish color to it. How can I access this area for repairs...is there someone I can call for advise. I'm afraid I have a big problem on my hands!! Any suggestions are welcome.

Check past articles

Check past (search) articles on the subject and then start a sytematic leak check to first eliminate the easy sources. Sounds like a tank top leak under the sole. Did you have a heavy person jump into the cabin or drop a something heavy? Being as far north as you are, did you have a lot of water in the bilge that froze or perhaps the boat was in below freezing temps with a full tank for a period of time? Either way, if a tank top leak (hopefully not)this is not a easy fix, and will require a good glass man. the sole will have to be cut out and the tank inspected and glassed over to fix and the sole replaced. Good luck, Steve

water

This sounds like your problem is coming from the compression post area. Under the table where the compression post goes down throough the floor, there is a cover plate which may be in two parts held in place by silicon. Cut the silicon and remove the plates whcih will give you access to the base of the compression post. Take your boat out under sail on both tacks and look at that area. Also, look when under power at full power. If the water is coming from there, get back with me and I will tell you where to 5200 seal the area. Also you willhave two screws in the base of the compression post. Are they there. I will wait till I hear back from you. Crazy Dave

Repairs

Thanks Dave and Steve. Will have a look at the compression post theory first as seems the least labor intensive. DAVE....Would the water coming in here, if this is the problem area, be coming from the tank or the outside. I was thinking about the brakish color of this water. The lake water here is crystal clear all the time. STEVE.....Have been very careful about getting the boat laid up in a dry condition and all boats here are out well prior to freeze up. Have a 6'1" Son though that may have entered a little heavily from time to time. I do notice however that the teak sole seems to be excessivey springy. Have no idea if that is normal or not. Thanks for the input guys!!

TRY THRU HULL CONNECTIONS

CHECK ALL HOSE CONNECTIONS ON THRU HULLS AND DRAIN ON ANCHOR LOCKER. I HAD LEAKS ON LOOSE HOSES ON THRU HULL FITTINGS AND ANCHOR LOCKER DRAIN (REMOVE PANEL IN VEE BERTH TO ACCESS). THEN I STILL HAD A LEAK AT COMPRESSION POST AS DAVE MENTIONED. LEAKS AT THRU HULLS CAUSED BY HEELING OVER SO THAT THEY ARE UNDER WATER. EVERY HOSE CONNECTION ON MY BOAT WAS LOOSE AFTER 4 YEARS.

Another idea

Hi Dean I had an "interesting" ballast tank leak in my 23.5. Have you moved or otherwise done any work on the porta potti? I replaced mine and in the process removed the original screws that held the toilet in. Well, seems that when the boat was manufactured they used screws that were too long and that they actually penetrated the ballast tank. When I removed them, the top of the tank started leaking. Fortunately the local dealer had seen this before and repaired it by putting screws covered with 5200 sealant back in the original holes. It hasn't leaked a drop in over a year and the repair was cheap. Good Luck Alan Long S/V Random Access

Checks -So-Far

Took Dave's suggestion and removed the plate to expose the nuts etc. on the compression post. Not a drop of water anywhere. In fact, dust is still all over the inside when you would expect it to be damp if this were the problem. Will be taking the boat out tonight to check it while tacking and under power as suggested. What I consider bad news is that I can now see a bit of "Brackish" water down the side of the tank vent with the use of a flashlight. I have my fingers crossed that this is not the source. Thanks Alan for the suggestion in the head but have touched nothing in that area. Dave.....Will let you know how the compression post looks tonight or tomorrow. Thanks to all.
