First let me say to all that have responded to my questions about the 1983 27 that I just bought, thanks for the help. We took it out yesterday and today in 5-10 knot wind and it was great. We sailed near Tyndall Air Force Base on Saturday and got to watch the Thunder Birds. Now to a mystery. The first time I inspected the boat, about a month ago the area under the boards where the keel bolts are was bone dry. The last time the boat was hauled was Sept. 2000. I had the boat hauled the 6th of March for a survey and again while at the slip the bolt area was bone dry upon inspection. I went down the 11th and again dry. I spent the night on the boat the 17th, and upon inspection the areas were bone dry. Before I left on Sunday the 18 my daughter and I ran a small amount of fresh water around the bolts and bilge to try the pump. We dryed all water and left. Went down on Friday night the 23rd for the weekend and now I have salt water in this area. Thinking it was some of the fresh I had used I sponged it dry. This morning I had more; not enough for the pump to get but 1/2 a small bucket. Along with this is the fact that you can hear what sounds like muffeled bubble pack popping or a crackling sound. My daughter thinks it's fish bumping the bottom. Would water be popping through the gasket or bedding compound where the raw water intake is? The sound may not have anything to do with anything and trying the bilge pump with fresh water may be in the same catagory, but now I have a leak somewhere. I know that it's not out of the ordinary but I searching for what happened to change my very dry bilge. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I can't get over the fact that apparently something has happened.

Shaft Packing

Its a good chance that your getting a little water through the prop shaft packing. In fact, if you don't have a dripless system, it supposed to leak a little when the motor is in gear. If you weren't initially getting a little water through you might have overheated the shaft and packing creating a small leak. I'd try to find somebody on your dock with experience in this area to show you what to look for. Obviously, the leak could be from any other hull penetration. I wouldn't rule out a deck leak even though it might have tasted salty, there might have been salt residue on the deck or in the bilge.

I agree with the previous guy, more than likely it is coming from the packing gland, otherwise did you put ice in your icebox? it it melts it will end up on the bilge, if it is from the packing gland it is supposed to be that way 1 or 2 drops per minute, if it is too much just tighten it and about the noise under the boat your daughter is right on the nose, it is either shrimp or fishes just the regular live creatures and your hull amplifies it. get out on the water and enjoy it now it is an order!
