I have had my 1992 Hunter 23 (winged cast iron keel) for 2 years. Today,for he 1st time, I found water in the 3 compartments under the cabin sole. There was about 1.5 inches. I sponged it out and a few minutes later there was more water which looked like it was coming from the small hole that leads to whatever is below the compartment. There is no apparent water coming down the bulkheads. Does anyone know what is below the compartments and what areas provide water access eg rubrail leak, keel/hull junction, etc? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Gary, My 23 does the same thing. As it happens, the water seeping out of the little hole in the "bilge" compartment is dribbling out of the spaces between the three compartments. It dribbles out slowly, but it can all be sponged out if you're patient... The water can come from any source, as the space between the is connected to the lazarette, the V-berth, the space under the porta-head, etc. I'm not sure about the exact source of the water in your case. I'd recommend sponging it all out (in the case of my H23, there were about 3 buckets full before it stopped dribbling out the little holes), and then checking back later to see if there's more water. If there is, you may have a serious leak. As a final thought, the most common places for a 23 to leak are the lower rudder pintle, and the cockpit drain, both of which are at the waterline on the transom. Check the bow eye
I had the same problem and it came from the bow eye. When sailing in waves it leaked through. and ended up in the same spot. Cliff

Well, I am not sure how it gets there, but I have had the problem after sailing for extended periods also. I cleaned it up, and it appears in that same spot ever so often. The gentleman that described it as coming from the bow eye makes sense to me now that he has mentioned it.

I thought I had responded to this earlier, but seems post is gone, regardless of where the leak originates it usually ends up here since everything ddrains to this area, the leak can be from rain , coming in hatches, port plex, chain plates et etc, the trick is to find out where you particular leak is coming from ,check the archives, also check keel bolts some one mentioned using a dry powder , such as flour to determine where the water is coming from by sprinkling it about , in suspect areas and then waiting for trails to show in flour, good luck, Mike B
Main hatch
My 88 H23 leaks a little on the left side of the sliding main hatch near the front. I haven't figured out exactly how it comes in, and sometimes it doesn't leak at all. Glad to see all the "usual suspects" (Jon, Cliff etc.) are still here. I was beginning to wonder if you were all busy sailing somewhere. We made out OK with Hurricane Gordon, just some gusty winds and lots of rain. We should be out of it by daylight tomorrow. Peter S/V (Wet) Raven

try the rub rail
i had the same problem and caulked the upper edge of the rub rail which slowed it considerably. i also fashioned a cabin cover out of a piece of sunbrella, and now it's vitrually bone dry down there.
