My 1985 14 ft. Javelin Oday is taking in water. I just painted the bottom and everything looks great. Someone suggested the centerboard gasket should be replaced. The deck is well bonded to the hull. Please reply to: ziggabite@home.com

taking in water

My 1985 Oday javelin is taking in a lot of water. The bottom is fine. It has just been painted. Not a scratch. Someone suggested replacing the centerboard gasket. Does this sound like the problem? After a couple of hours of sailing, when I pull the plug on the trailer, it drains for at least 10 minutes.

Javelin leaks

Marshall, When I bought my Javelin several years ago, it was sitting in the water. After I pulled it out on the trailer and took out the plug, it too drained water for about 10 minutes. (I asked the previous owner, who was standing nearby, if the Javelin had one of those "water ballast" systems.) My problem was solved by replacing the two rubber bushings that are on each side of the centerboard pivot pin. These are accessed by the two round screw-in deck plates located each side of the centerboard housing. You might want to clean the fiberglass wall that these two bushings stick to, since they can promote leaking if you have any salt water thingies growing in there. Also, watch that you don't let the centerboard get away from you when you have pulled the pin. The board weighs 50-60 lbs and can be a bear getting it back in place to reinsert the pin. Another place you might look is the drain plug itself. It might be leaking if the rubber is old or cracked or not pliable. Good luck. Bob McGee
