Leak where the mast enters the salon

During a heavy rain i noticed a drop of water running down the mast in the salon of my '99 H340. Very heavy storm and the drip was about 1 every 20 seconds. Seems like the seal where the mast enters the boat could be not tight. Anyone ever hear of this or any ideas about addressing it ... advice appreciated ... thanks.. Dennis

Spartite -- or something similar

Just had my mast pulled in Jan. The yard used a compound that looks like rubber or heavy duty caulk. I think they said it was Spartite. Forms a pretty solid seal around the mast. They also installed a "boot" -- vinyl-looking cover with elastic, but the person who did the work said it was more for show than for water-repelent.

MAST

We have a 450 and [99] had the same.It is the wires that have been put there and axposed in such a way to let water run in,try and rearrange them.

Wires causing leak

Wires are a good point, will check ... also may caulk as suggested as precautionary measure ... thx

Water in the Mast

The main halyard passesm over a sheave at the very top of the mast which leaves to mast open to precipitation. Water inside the mast is pulled by gravity to the lowest point. Most of this liquid follows the inside of the mast and is vented by the mast step. A small amount collects on the wires and will follow the wires to the interior. A simple fix is to loop the wires above the mast step so that the lowest drip point can utilize the mast step vent. Sailkota H336

A good long term fix that will work!!!

Almost every deck stepped mast has the potential for water leakage down through the wiring hole. As a matter of fact, if you look at the new Hunters, they route the wires out the side of the mast and then down into a wiring tube to eliminate this problem. Most people do not realize how much water can get into the mast in a heavy rain through all of the openings in the top of the mast. Here is a sure cure. First of all, the small stub at the mast step is not high enough, so when the base of the mast fills with water, it runs down the wires which are almost impossible to caulk. For the time being, drill 2 small 1/8" holes in the mast just above the depth of the mast step. This will help any water collecting in the base of the mast run off. Next time you step the mast, find a piece of plastic hose which will fit over the little stub at the mast step, put the wiring through the plastic hose and then really caulk the wiring in that hose leaving enought slack so you can put the end of the hose over the stub. This will allow more water to collect in the base of the mast before it could possibly run down the wiring even if you did not fully caulk the wires in the plastic hose and the small holes you drilled in the base of the mast will let the water run out. I have done this on my last 3 deck stepped masts and had no more water come below. It really works.
