Leak Under Table

I have water under the deck beneath the table on my 83 C22. I can't access this area without cutting a hole in the liner. I also am wondering where this water is coming from. Anybody have any experience or solutions? Appreciate any advise or ideas. Thanks.

I don't think I'd be in a hurry to cut a hole in

floor.....likely the water is winding up under the table only because that's the lowest place in the bilge for it to go. You didn't say what type of keel you have....but since you didn't mention keel bolts (there's generally good access to them) I'm guessing you have a swing and it's not uncommon for swing keels to 1) develope leakes around the trunk, or 2) to leak through areas such as the pivot pin etc from water just plain splashing around (I'm not at all familiar with the Cat swingkeel design). You haven't said how much water you're talking about. Could it be a thru-hull fitting of some kind? I've even heard of leaks coming from where the deck and hull join. No access to the water at all? I want to suggest that you haul the boat, dry the water up and visually inspect the hull, especially around that pesky trunk. If that doesn't show anything, take a garden hose and spray different areas and checking to see if the water again developes in the bilge. You don't have an easy problem to fix. Good Luck, Brad

access

I hope I'm not already stating the obvious, but my access is under the step next to the keel crank. Its the bilge compartment on the port side of the keel copartment. If you don't have a swing keel, then I don't know anything about it. Hope it helps

Leaks

My 1975 C22 had a leak up at the bow where the hull and deck are joined together. It showed up in the bilge near the winch area and only after sailing into good-sized waves. I fixed it by installing the interior tiedown between the forward stay plate and the trailer ring (not sure if an 83 already has this, but if it does, perphaps your's is loose). Also, I caulked the area well with a good silicone compound. I have another small leak that shows up about once a year after heavy rains by dripping into the cabin light just port to the table. Its not from the masthead light connection as I thought, so maybe its from one of the stanchions or the pulpit hardware. No big deal, but goes to show that you're not alone.

Check the Windows

I agree that you have an interesting problem to solve. One of the other places that have shown to be a trouble spot on the '22 are the window seals...both the frame to hull joint and the frame to glass joint. The one place at a time with the garden hose approach will help you determine the exact cause...or causes! Good luck.

Leak

Haul the boat out. Jack up the front of the trailer about 18 inches (more in small increments if needed) and watch the water flow aft from the midships access panel beneath the companion way (door). I sucked up all the water, used dessicant and kept a light on all night long, (25watt), for a couple of nights, to keep the moisture at bay. My leak was comming from the outboard sheet block track. My keel locking bolt also leaks a bit, just a trickle though. Got it bone dry and went sailing again only to find more water... from somewhere else no doubt. Campy

Hidden Leaks

I had a leak that showed up under the rear table seat in the storage area and below the winch by the battery box on an 82 C22. It turned out after much searching to be coming from the rudder gudgeons. I resealed the mounting bolts with 3M 5200 and after 8 days of sailing the boat was bone dry
