Am looking for suggestions on stopping a leak through the deck step. The obvious is to pull the mast out and caulk around the wiring, where water seems to be flowing through. Anyone fixed a leak like this without pulling mast?

Yup

On an earlier h34 from 1983 I was able to remove the halyard sheaves from the mast base and chalk the wiring tube but they changed the design on the newer ones and I'm not sure that is possible

Jamie,,,

check the archives...I remember seeing several postings with pictures of repairs for that sort of problem. One showed how a stainless compression post was installed within the teak wrapping. It seems to be a problem with the later models (later than my '83) that lack the large black mast base casting.

Maybe a bandaid...

If you have weep holes or some other small access near the base of the mast you could try Captain Tolleys Creeping Crack Cure. Just squirt a whole bunch in there. It's definitely a bandaid, not a cure, but it does work. I've had decent success with it. Is there a wood core under the mast? It would be best to permanently fix the issue before it leads to more costly repairs (trust me, I'm in the middle of repairing my core now). Manny

Mast step leak

there is a stip of aluminium from the botom of the mast at the back up to the gooseneck. Remove the six screws that hold on the kicker attachment plate and slide the strip up. I shortened the strip on mine to give more access. The cables go up the mast inside this track behind the strip. I doubt if there is enough access to seal the cables. If there is then clean the cables thoroughly and apply a sealant such as 3m 5200. Smooth down with liquid soap, not water. I removed the mast and re-routed the cables out of the mast and made a hole 30 mm dia through the deck 160 mm in front of the mast. The deck is about 20 mm thick here. I then fed all the cables through a deck gland plate and terminated the connections inside the cabin.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I really didn't expect so much great advice. Appreciate all the response. I have the teak cover off for the winter as I am aware of the potential for compression post rot. (none so far) Where the boat is out of the water for the winter, i will try to tough it out and nake sure water doesn't build up and freeze. Pull the mast out after launch. Bigger problem was back siphoning of water into cylinders last year, leading to a seized engine. Am replacing with a 3YM30 and hope to find someone who can rebuild the old engine for resale. Block is fine, just a cylinder rebore. The joys of boat ownership are neverending. Cheers from Halifax and 6" of new snow. (first of season) Hunter 34 Jubilation,Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron
