The leak is from the end plug on the base of the head; this is the opposite side from the pump. This is a round plug with a hexagon key hole for install and removal. What tool do you use to remove this? It seems like a simple matter to unscrew this, clean, apply new sealant and reinstall...how do you get this out?

Hi Peg; hate to disagree, but yes that is a plug. It is threaded into the end of the toilet base, at the end by the toilet bowl. It was put there for (2) reasons: 1) as a drain plug to aid in winterizing the head, and 2) when the actual part is molded, that opening must be there, as that is where the "core" is inserted and removed, to mold the passageway into the part, that runs between the toilet bowl and the toilet pump.

The simplest way to get a removal tool, is to run down to the hardware store and buy a 1/2" hex head bolt, about 2 or 3 inches long (65 cents?). The hex head on the 1/2" bolt will measure 3/4" across the flats - same basic size as the recess in the plug. Insert the bolt head into the recess in the plug. It may be necessary to file it a bit to get it to fit, or to tap it in gently with a hammer, as sometimes the hex "hole" shrinks a bit when it comes out of the mold and cools down. After getting the bolt head into the recess, snap a pair of Vice-Grip pliers onto the shank of the bolt. That's your tool to screw the plug in or out.

I knew I should have waited and let you answer it.

That's why I emailed you!

If that plug is only 1/2", it's not what I thought it was or WHERE I thought it was...it appeared to me in his photo be in the base right below the bowl, and a LOT bigger than 1/2"!

So where IS it? I can't find it in the drawing.

This is the part number 1249 on the parts sheet but this one looks to be some kind of non standard replacement that someone found as a substitute. The best fix is to replace it with the proper part. Chuck

Remove as mentioned with maybe the bolt and replace it with PVC plug of proper size.

The plug isn't 1/2"; it is a 1 1/2" pipe plug. In the case of the PHII, it is a special plug (part #1249) that fits flush with the end of the base, to allow clearance for the two-part cover that goes over the base. But if the two-part cover isn't an issue with it, a regular PVC 1 1/2" pipe plug from Lowe's or Home Depot will also work.

Peg, it isn't shown on the drawing, but a "line" is pointing to where it is, with the referenced part # 1249. The actual part # for the base itself, is #1248W, and when the base is purchased, it comes with the plug already installed. The plug can be purchased separately, part #1249.

Thanks, Vic... I guess I've never seen it before because I've never seen the end of the base with the cover off...prob'ly 'cuz I've never heard of a leak there before.

(Note to self...save this thread in "advice and troubleshooting" file.)
