leak in stern

Good morning to all early risers.
I have been trying to trouble shoot the origin of a leak that appears to allow for water to accumulate in the stern of my boat behind the fuel tank and aft of the prop strut under the cockpit. I first believed that it was from the stuffing box but that is lower than the area where the water sat. I then removed the fuel tank and found the strut firmly secured with no evidence of leaking at the bolts. Moving a stern I found the thru hull for the sink and wondered if this is the source. The boat is on hard and I found the thru hull is just a hole in the hull. This drain has a ball valve on it. I have not yet tested if the line is leaking on the inside which I will try the next time I am out at the yard. My question is this: There is no thru hull fitting, only what appears to be a hole drilled in the hull. Could this be leaking and if so, how does one repair that? The amount of water that accumulates is not much but it seems to be drawn into the stuffing box while the boat is under power.

You should never have "just a hole in the hull". Put in a bronze mushroom thru hull and attach a ball valve sea cock. My 27 Catalina had only copper or iron pipe glassed into the hull from the factory. I had those removed and proper thru hull fittings installed. You'll sleep better at night. You know, my ice box drains just aft of the stuffing box and I will see small amounts of water from that.

Thanks for the response. I would like to do this myself. Is it a simple matter of drilling out the pipe and replacing it with a bronze mushroom? I would imagine that the drill bit would have to be as wide as the mushroom

As wide (well, slightly wider) as the mushroom's "stem".
