Leak in raw water strainer

During spring commissioning I discovered that the seal around the top of my raw water strainer is leaking (not badly yet). It appears that there was a cork liner around the seal that has gotten compressed and hard and is allowing an oozing leak when the seacock is open. I don't really want to replace the entire strainer because of an old seal. Does anyone know if these cork seals can be replaced and if so where they can be purchased? Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Martin Cole S/V ARES

Cork Seal

I've had the same problem throughout last season and ended up using automotive non-hardening gasket sealer as a temporary fix. I've been meaning to look at an automotive store for sheet gasket material so I can scrape out the old cork and glue in some new material.

RE: Strainer Gasket

Hello Martin, When I bought my 33.5, my engine was always overheating. After many hours of troubleshooting the entire cooling system, I discovered that my raw water strainer was leaking...sucking air. I found a gasket kit in a marine store that had the size to fit. This new gasket is rubber. Since I replaced this gasket, I haven't overheated once. Good luck, Capn' Brent

Send a note to the manufacturer

I have a H320 which has strainers from Shurflo. I could't find replacement seals anywhere so I went to their website and sent them an email asked their customer service folks where to find one. The next thing I knew one showed up in the mail - gratis. Perhaps the manufacturer of your strainer will be as good as the Shurflo folks?

Perko replacements

Martin, I have a Perko water strainer in my L37 and purchased the cork replacement gaskets last year at WM. The strainer cap lifted off. I dug out the hardened, compressed cork gasket and replaced it. Then brushed the cap until it glistened. The other gaskets (2, top & bottom) didn't leak, so I didn't replace them. BTW, I love Robinhood Marine Center. Been ther a couple of times. We held our rendezvous there last summer.

Thanks for the help

Thanks to the people who responded to my question. I called Perko and the technician I spoke to was able to give me the West Marine item number for the gasket kit I need to fix the leak. Thanks again, Martin Cole S/V ARES

Martin, does the seal really need replacing?...

I've found that on my ten year old seals, that are hardened, still seal unless I replace the cover slightly askew. Once I feel that the cap is back in its seat, I alternately tighten the wing nuts. I also put some teflon grease on the threads. Otherwise, the nuts might feel tight but bind up on the dry stud. It does not take much to seal these strainer caps, just good contact between the seal and its bed. Inspect it with a glass for imperfections and/or grit. Maybe just a good cleaning of the seal with a tooth brush is in order rather than replacing. Terry

silicone grease

A little silicone grease on the gasket will work wonders to help it seal. This also works very well for port light rubber seals. Dont use vasiline or any petroleum product since the petroleum will break down the rubber.

Perko Gasket Set

Martin, As with the previous response I also purchased the 3 piece gasket set @ West Marine (appox $18). Old gaskets lost seal due to hardening. Cheers! Chet
