Leak in Exhaust Hose

I just bought my 79 Hunter 30 last November and had noted a trickle of water coming from aft while checking to ensure the shaft packing dripped. I just had a overheating event that cleared itself and found I still have quite a bit of water (Maybe a cup every 30 seconds) running from aft when the motor is running. Faster speed, more water. It looks like maybe the hose is leaking where it runs through a metal bulkhead below the fuel tank, but I could only see the aft side of the metal bulkhead from the Starboard storage locker area. Anyone have experience with this? Maybe the bulkhead fitting has rusted through? Can I bypass this bulkhead with a continous hose? Everything is dry from the exhaust port back to the bulkhead, so it looks like I have exhaust water escaping from the hose mid point in the deep dark recess.

Have a 33 with no metal bulkhead? after you pull the old hose out you should be able to figure out what the next step is. You may want to post this over on the Cherubini forum and have other 30 owners have a look.

Thanks Paul. I'm sure you're right that this should have been in the 30 forum. Don't see a way to move it, so I"ll just hang in for a bit. Best regards

My set-up from the mixing elbow ( now is the time to replace all three parts as you do not know the engine history) on my Yamar YSM12 is to go to Vetus water lift and then on a high loop stright to the stern thoughhull. What was leaking in my case was the original metal muffler, which I replaced.

good luck

I had` a 1980 H30 with a similar problem. I'll bet that your metal bulhead is actually the SS water lift muffler. It sits under the shelf that holds the batteries and fuel tank. My best advice is to replace the entire exhaust hose and muffler system. On my boat, I could access the exhaust thru hull through the starboard lazarette and disconnect the hose. Disconnect the hose from the mixing elbow on the engine. Then, laying on top of the engine (cold) and facing aft, you can pull the whole exhaust assembly out and over the engine. It is much easier measure and assemble a new engine hose, muffler and exhaust hose unit with the whole thing out on the dock or workbench. Replacement is just the reverse of the removal.
Ask Hunter marine for a source for the muffler. I replaced the old SS unit with a Primex fiberglass muffler Part # MC2. The old number for Primex is 407-886-1144 but may still work.

Ahhh, a muffler! This is my first inboard, so please forgive my ignorance. That sounds like exactly what I'm seeing. I sure appreciate all the help from everyone, and also the info on the fiberglass muffler. I was in the stbd lazarette yesterday and can easily reach the aft thru hull connection. Getting back out wasn't a pretty picture though. Thanks again..., Tom
