Leak in cooler

I have a leak in the galley cooler or ice box. It must be in the drain hose but I cannot get at it! I have removed all cabinetry from around the ice box but cannot remove the panel in front of the box to get at the hose. I am thinking about cutting an access port, as I have run out of ideas in getting to the drain. Has anybody else had a leak in there?

Exactly

Bob: This is exactly what I am going to do in the next week or two. I purchased an inspection plate (6") and plan on cutting a hole under the sink in our H'31. This is going to give me the ability to route the hose into the bilge and add insulation too. I'll be interested in your feed back on this issue.

Plugged It

We plugged the drain on our icebox. Got tired of the cooler water going into the bilge. After each trip I use a hand held bilge pump into the sink..

Spilt Milk

Ever think how great your bilge will smell after sailing a day with a leaking carton of milk draining down there? Plug it. We did 18 years ago and have never regretted it.

did it

I had a leak in the same place on my 33.5. I had to cut an access hole, but I didn't want a big round Beckson inspection port there, so I used a teak switch plate and you hardly notice it. I fixed the leak, but I use a rubber stopper or a cork in the drain to keep the ice water in the box, which keeps food colder. Then I can pull the plug after the cruise, or hand-pump it if something spills.

If you can't beat it, plug it!

Thanks gang. I've got a hole to plug... and a lot of screws to put back. It was the spilt milk that got me. Paul Bryan s/v WhisperIII

Try another solution

We had the same problem, but I have done two things differently then previously described. I patched the leak using a samller diameter tube that fit snuggly inside the ice box drain tube. Then I coated with 3M 101 and slide it down inside the drain tube of the icebox. The second deals with the drainage into the bilge. Instead of plugging the drain I rerouted it to a small manual faucet pump near at the galley sink. While cruising I just pump it into the sink about every other day. I have to admitt I copied this idea from some else but it has worked great.
