leak at secondary fuel filter

I have noticed a seep on the top of my secondary fuel filter of the Yanmar 2QM. Earlier this year, when I had the engine oil and filter changed, I think the mechanic must have had a hangover. He did not bleed it properly and had to bleed at the injectors too; he forgot how much oil the engine took; and 2 weeks later, I found a bolt on the floor which had come out where the filter is attached to the block. I reattached and tightened, but now am seeing fuel right under these two bolts. The engine starts and runs ok. (by ok, i mean it has to crank for a little to get it going, but then is fine. I run it at 2800 rpm and get 6.1 knots if there is no wind. Any idea on a fix? Is there a danger of overtightening these two attachment bolts? I have checked archives and find nothing. thanks. coleman brydon

you need a new washer

Thre is a little copper washer on the bleeder screw on top of the sec. fuel filter. After bleeding several times, the washer gets crushed and no longer seals. The natural reaction is to keep tightening the screw, but over-tightening will eventually strip the screw. Replace the washer it and it should stop leaking.

tighten screw?

Thanks for the reply. Might it be that the screw on the top of the filter might be loose?

Stripped Threads?

Another leak-source possibility with the bleed screw on the top is the threads could be stripped. Stripped threads is a common mode of failure for this filter so don't tighten any more than you have to.

Replaced mine last week

I had the exact same problem on my Yanmar 2QM15 last week. The only difference is that the stupid mechanic that stripped the threads on my filter was Me. Fuel was weeping from the banjo fitting atop the filter so I thought one more turn ought to stop the leak. Instead the threads stripped and I had to replace the entire housing. It only took 10 minutes to take apart and 10 minutes to put back on. Cost $46.23. Make certain to get all new copper washers. Apparently they are one time use only. -Marvin

leaky fuel filter

My headache leak was at the exit from the fuel lift pump.I now routinely coat all copper washers (as well as paper gaskets) with the Yanmar sealant recommended for the head gasket. Seems to work well.

where did you get the part?

Did you have to replace the whole filter?

Coleman,

Coleman, The whole housing has to be replaced, the good part is Yanmar gives you a new filter element when you but the housing. Simple job, 2 bolts hold to on then a couple of fuel lines. Available from any Yanmar dealer. Pat McCartin
