I am interested in leading my lines aft on My Catalina 22. I have had people tell me I need a winch and some say No that a small halyard stopper would work. Also any thoughts on ordering the parts all from One Place? Any help is appreciated

Think Twice

Think twice, lines lead aft isn't all it's cracked up to be. I did this on my C-30 and found it put so much friction in the lines that it's quicker and easier to just go forward to the mast. You probably will need a winch.

Go For It

If you use good blocks and make fair leads the benifits of staying in the cockpit will outweigh the extra friction especially when short handed. Stan

Parts for Anything

West Marine has everything you need a reasonable price. Check http://www.westmarine.com to order a catalog. If you have trouble choosing the right parts they have technical advise over the phone. They do price matching so even if it's cheaper in another cartalog (Boat US, Defender..etc..) they will match it.

YES do it

I had them back on my 27 and 30! The 27 was done properly and the lines worked great. My 30 was originally done by an idiot and I am still rerouting them properly. The only line that gives me problems still is the mainsheet. On a small boat like a 22 the friction you get will be minimal compared to the safety of not going out on the fordeck! For halyards you will likely need a cabin top winch. Outhaul, downhaul and reefing lines probably can be done by hand on a boat that small. I assume you will put in rollerfurling?

Lines Lead Aft

I had a Venture 22, not unlike a Catlina , and lead the following lines aft: both halyards, vang, downhaul. It worked out great, and I didn't feel the need for a winch. I suggest using all Harken hardware to minimize friction. I left the old halyard cleats on the mast so I could tie off the halyards there temporarily if I needed to. -- Leon Sisson
