I just purchased a 1975 Mariner 2+2 centerboard model, and have inspected the boat more closely after getting it home. There dose not appear to be any lead ballast in the bilge. Or is it located somewhere else and not visible? I believe there is supposed to be 250 lbs of ballast in the centerboard model, or am I mistaken? If this is missing, where can I get lead ballast? Another question too: I noticed that two supports have been placed under the cockpit floor, one may be older (maybe original and part of the construction design), the other looks newer. Problem is, the newer one has forced the cockpit floor up too far and there are cracks in the gelcoat. Does anyone know if these are original components? Is it likely the fiberglass cockpit flooring is damaged too? How should this repair be done if necessary? Thanks for any ideas! Hal

I emailed Stuart Marine about this and they said the lead ballast in the Mariner is glassed in next to the centerboard trunk, so I gues I'm not missing it after all. The upright supports under the cockpit floor may be original he said, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else with a Mariner 2+2 finds them there. Thanks. Hal

Hal, I'll try to check my '70 2+2 in the next couple of days for the supports. I don't recall seeing any, but I've never looked for them either. In the meantime, it may be helpful if you could post a picture of your supports. As for the lead ballast, Stuart is spot on....mine is glassed into the cb truck starting about 8 - 12" from the forward edge of the trunk. Good luck, Dan

Hal, Never made it out to the boat today. Spent my day off closing the pool instead. I had on thought, how do you know your Mariner is a '75. If you can find the Class Number you can cross reference the hull identification chart at the U.S. Mariner Association's Web site. I'll shoot for those pictures this weekend. Dan

Cockpit supports
Dan, Thanks for checking your boat and posting the photo. It looks like the support you mention is visible in your photo aft the centerboard trunk. In mine it was cut away on both sides and the plywood shim was added on top, with a batch of thickened epoxy apparently to support the cockpit sole. I'll have to look at it more closely tomorrow to see why this support was cut and whether any structural weakness may have resulted. Hal
