I'm in the process of setting up a lazy jack system on my C&C 24. There's a good reference of a lazyjack system setup on a website (see link) and a picture is attached. I am not certain though, whether the cheek blocks on the mast and boom need to be placed on port and starboard sides of the mast and boom - or on one side only. If the blocks are to be placed on one side - is there a preference? Thank you all in advance,

lazy jacks are on both sides of the sail. what you see in the picture would have to be doubled with the exception of the eye straps, they are shared.

Will that work with outhauls?

Lazy jack setup
Tony: I would go with the type of system Gearge has suggested, which dispenses with the blocks on the boom. You install 2 small blocks on the mast and when the lines come out of the blocks you "Y" them into one line. Additionally, these systems are simple to make and much less costly than the store bought models. Next time your in West Marine take a look at them and you'll see how simple they are. I put the home mades ones on a C25 and my C30 plus about 4 more boats that saw the setup. The hardest part is selecting the pad eye attachment points on the boom. I found that the farther back on the boom that I placed the aft pad eyes the better the system worked.

Hi Tony: My Lazy Jacks are similar to your diagram with the exception of the cheek blocks on the boom. As there is very little sail at the tail of the boom to control or flake, I eliminated the boom cheek blocks. My rig looks just like the green and blue lines of your diagram, but the red line loops over the mast cheek block and comes straight down the mast and is cleated off to small cleats affixed to the mast. I did this for several reasons, battens getting hung up in the top most line, the elimination of a couple of pieces of hardware, and keeping the lines clear of the outhaul and reefing lines. In other words, it looks pretty much like the rig in Georges related link. Luck!!

Another way to attach blocks to the mast
is replace the stainless bolts that attach the spreaders next to the mast with stainless eye bolts (with eyes down) to these I attached small blocks (from ebay). I did have to drill the boom to attach the pad eyes. Because I single hand all the time, instead of running the hoisting lines like the picture here has, I stop them at the boom end, where I can slack off or hoist while at the wheel when I want to drop the sail. I secure the coil under the boom to secure either tight or slack. I don't have a picture, but if anyone wants more info, I'll try to draw something up and submit it, or email me at mbechelb@carrollsweb.com

I went with Tom's home-made lazy jacks. They work fine for me and my H23.5. His instructions say 3/8 line and bungee cord, but it turns out it's 5/16 (or you won't find the same nice bungee cord ends to fit the 3/8"). Tom agrees but he hasn't updated the instructions yet. I too had considered using the spreaders.
...as an attachment point for the blocks. (see my other post on rebuilding the attachment point of the spreaders). problem may be height. if i calculate 70% height above boom thats 18' above boom. spreaders are only about 10' above the boom. (18' seems like a long ways up). looks like there could be an issue running the lines into the lower stays too if i attach at the spreaders?? any input. also, i was hoping to get away with only 2 lines under the boom. one at about 33% and the other at about 66% boom length. is this enough lines to capture all the sail or should i plan on using 3 lines to catch the sail? william <edit> oops, the post regarding redoing the spreader attachment is on the small boats forum...
