I am considering the purchase of lazy jacks for my 23.5. Any recommendations or comments?

added mine this spring

i guess i'm an unmitigated gadget nut, 'cause every time i add something, i can't believe i ever sailed without it. lazy jacks are a case in point. i single hand most of the time on my 23, and nothing beats the ease of folding away the main with a jack system (i got mine with the mack pack from mack sails, another gadget i love). by the time i'm back in the slip, all i have to do is put on the bumpers, and i'm outta there...

Well, a couple...

Dan, Here's my experience. 1. Make sure attach point to mast is no where near the main headbaord when sail is reefed. 2. Jacks must stow against mast when raising sail. In case you don't know - There is some sort of weird and evil attraction between the main head board and various parts of any lazy jack rig. If the board can get to it, it will. Good luck! Make Them Yourself

I installed them on my 23.5 and it was remarkably easy. Check the archives and the photo forum I outlined in detail how I did it.

Sail Craddle

I added a product called Sail Craddle frm JSI. Sail Craddle has a web site too. For $110 it is a easy to use out of the way system. I wouldn't sail without jacks, especially with my full battens. Sail was always all over the cabin top. Good luck!

homemade jacks

I made a set of jacks after the first time I sailed up to a dock and dropped the main all over the cockpit just when I wanted to snag a docking cleat! My system is so incredibily simple I'm ashamed to tell it. But I looped a line over the spreaders with both ends coming down to within about 3 feet of the boom. Then I took heavy (about 7/16ths) shock cord and tied inverted V's on both sides of the boom up to the upper line. Used shock cord so the boom will drop automatically when I pop the topping lift. I have begun to unattach the shock cord to give the sail a little more breathing room. It's incredibly simple and cheap but it works for now. PS I used rings at the bottom of the upper line to allow the shock cord to move, and clips at the boom to detach when necessary. Main cover fits inside the jacks. No big deal.

Sail Cradle

How about some more info on the Sail Cradle. Did a web search and found a small write up on it but not much else. What is there URL? Or what is JSIs URL?

Lazy Jack INFO

Dan, I have been planning to install lazy jacks on my 260, and like Rick, I think that I can make a set myself and save considerably. I have found detailed instructions for installing Harken lazy jacks on their site at www.harken.com. This may be helful to you even if you make your own. What I am still looking for is a rope eye that opens so that I can quickly remove the lazy jacks from the boom and fasten them to the mast while sailing or when they are not needed. A couple of questions for others with experience with lazy jacks: Most of the kits use wire rope for the top half of the lazy jacks. Is that really necessary? Secondly, I plan on attaching the top of the lazy jacks to the inderside of the spreaders, about eight inches from the mast. Anyone see a problem with this? Thanks, Bernie

Bernie... I don't see a problem.

I installed the Schefier (sp?) stowable lazy jacks earler this year. Rope or wire, both should work. I think maybe the wire is used because it has a longer life when exposed to the elements and replacment is a trip up the mast on sume boats. I store my lazy jacks on the reef hooks when raising the sail or putting on the sail cover. It's just convienent. As for mounting on the spreader, I'd do a little research on the expected loads and what the spreader can take, long term. Spreaders are designed to take compression more than shear, I think.
