I would like to install an easy to operate lazy jack set up that can be deployed from the cockpit. (We sail an O'Day 272LE). Any recommendations? Does anyone use a system called "E-Z JAX" ? All input will be greatly appreciated. Tnx, jb www.ezjax.com

I think they are great. All of them work about the same and all install about the same. I looked at what Harken had to offer in a prefab kit and then built my own at about 30% the cost. I think you will find that they really enhance your sail handling. From what I hear, EZ Jacks are just about as good as the rest. I don't think you can go wrong with them.

Lazy Jack's are great. During that critical stage when you drop the sail it's nice to see where your going and not have the sail block your view. I set them up prior to leaving the dock and sail with them employed. I had my rigger (NE Yacht Rigging) install mine for about 75% the price of West Marine's kit. They rigged them to tie to cleats on the boom so you don't have to cut your sail cover. When I get back to the dock, I release the lines cleated to the boom and am able to put on my sail cover.

E-Z JAX

I went with the E-Z JAX after costing out the materials to design my own. See the installation on my h40 at the related link. Scroll down to "Sail Accessories". Click the thumbnail to enlarge the photo. The E-Z JAX comes with hardare, all splices made, and a set of instructions tailored for your boat. They require no modifications for your sail cover. Sam

The PO of my C27 had them, but I am re-rigging them a bit. The illustration at the address below may be of help: it is pretty much what I have (but have not yet used). Hope to splash in two weeks or so and try them out! I have a fully battened main, and singlehand a lot, and think this will make sail retrieval a lot easier. Roger C27 5012 &Mabel Cape Cod

Boom length

Jerry, I will have to measure the boom, as it seems not to be a listed number. I am sure it is original, and my assumption is that all standard rig original booms are the same length. If your question relates to how much line, I just bought way too much 1/4 inch dacron line on sail at Sailnet (at the time) for 14 cents a foot, and I figure I will trim to fit after the maast is stepped. I can always use leftover line. The main thing for me was to get the line into the blocks on the mast above the spreaders BEFORE that might require going up the mast to do it! I also got nylon rings, not the stainless rings that show on the diagram to avoid chafe. Roger

New England Yacht Rigging is located

on Water Street, East Greenwich, RI. Charlie & helpers do the rigging and Maggie handles the office duties. I had them install my CDI roller furling, lazy jacks, and lower shrowds at various times and found them to be reasonably priced, competent, and very easy with whom to do business. Call Maggie on 401-884-1112 - she's terrific.
