I'm planning on installing lazy jacks on my hunter 30. I am intrigued by the Shaeffer system because of their claim that you do not need to cut slots in the mainsail cover due to their unique stowage system. I am getting mixed information on whether or not the harken system works as well. West Marine carries both brands but claims that harken outsells shaeffer. Can anyone tell me how these two systems compare?

Make Em

The lazy jack was the single most - best addition to my H26 that I've made yet. But, it's one of those things you just have to do yourself. Find a boat with a system that works well for the boat, purchase the hardware and adapt it for your boat. I would highly recommend the style that “folds” back along the boom to the mast. That way, I can guarantee it will not get in the way of your cover. The only time you have to lower the lazy jacks is when your putting your boat to bed. (They can be kept loose enough as to not interfere with the shape of the sail while under sail). If your Hunter has lines inside the mast or boom, make sure you rivet the hardware on – don’t screw it on.

Don't cut your mainsail cover...

Bob, I have Harken lazyjacks -- I just ease the jacks to attach the mainsail cover. Of course, it is not zippered.

Try a Different Brand

Call Sail Care in Pennsylvania. They sell a system that disconnects from the boom after you tie your sail to the boom. A friend installed in on his 37 footer and if I did not already have a standard lazy jack, I would buy it!

Try Dutchman, read on

I recently installed Schaeffer lazy jacks on my H31. The kit comes with a "t" type bracket you can mount at the aft end of the boom, you ease the lines and bring it back to put the sail cover on. Not real complicated but a pain here in the summer. As I have learned, it's real hot out there manhandling the main. When I asked this same question on line, (see earlier this year) several people told me to go for the dutchman system instead. I did not listen and now, really and truly wish I had. I've eyed the new hunters with great envy. since i single hand some, it would be so very nice. I wish I had listened. Take my advice for what you will. BTW, would you like to buy a nice Schaeffer kit for a good price. Email me if so, I'l make you a deal. dcdon@hotmail.com

SAVE A HUNDRED

Harkin or Schaefer costs about $145.00, if you purchase all the hardware, and yacht braid, it will cost you $40.00, the only time it will cost you a little more, if you have an extra long boom and you wanted dbl lazy jacks, which in your case, you don't.

E-Z Jacks

I have them on my 336 and wouldn't have anything else. No cover or sail mods required. They are rarely in the way.

Harken on 30

We installed the Harken on a 89 Hunter 30 and did not have to modify the sail cover. You just strech the cover around the lazy jack ends and snap the cover on.
