We are considering lazy jacks. We thought it best to attach the jacks to the shrouds. However, this may be a problem on a broad reach. We want to do away with the topping lift. It interferes with the roach in the main. Any thoughts?

To eliminate the topping lift you'll need to add a rigid vang or boom kicker. I'd recommend the unit from Garhauer. I wouldn't recommend trying to use lazy jacks to hold the boom up in place of the topping lift, if that's what you're thinking.

The H336 is an approximately 10% larger version of your boat, and it has a basic and simple lazy jack system that's easy to adjust. You might want to take a look at it and see if it would suit your boat.

Two issues here.

!. Get a "BoomKicker " to hold up your boom. Couple of hundred $ from West or Defender, May be available here on SBO.

2. lazy jacks are to contain the sail. Must be attached to the boom, not the shrouds. Mount a turning block on the mast above the spreaders, and use the downhaul as the forward leg of the lazy jacks, you can then slack them, lead them along the boom to the mast so they are out of the airsream when sailing

We have lazy jacks and sailpack on our 29.5. I am thinking relocating the top attachment of the lazy jacks out on the shrouds vs the mast to help clear the battens going up. They can be a pain with the full battened main. I too am considering the rigid vang to replace the topping lift. Currently I can drop my topping lift enough to clear the battens pretty good.

I agree with Dave. I have a Mackpack installed on my 29.5 and the greatest difficulty I have is in raising the sail and getting the battens caught under the lazy jacks. That issue aside, I absolutely love the sail pack because I got tired of wrestling with the main while I was trying to tame and cover it. I'm uncertain about replacing the topping lift because I use it in combination with the halyard to keep my boom from swinging while parked at dock. What would be the advantage of a solid vang or a kicker?

How heavy is your mainsail? Yes they are neat to hold the sail in place when dropping it down but the rest of the time they can be a PITA as they will interfere with the hoisting of the sail and will require various adjustments. If you can easily manhandle the sail while singlehandling the boat I would not consider them.

The 29.5 has a pretty good sized full battened main. I love the pack and will put up with the little inconveniences. It proved itself to me many times when the weather got too rough and we could nose into the wind and drop it right down in the pack. I didn't have to worry about the wife up on deck wrestling with the sail or try and steer in rough weather.

I have a H280, which carries a full batton, full roach main. I have lazy jacks installed, along with a Harken batt-car system on the mast. I do not have any major problems greeting the main caught in the jacks. I have thought about "stretching" the jacks out with bungee cords to the spreaders, but not sure that would be worth the effort. I do like the fact that I can drop the main, and keep it on the boom until I can tie it up. Would not want to single-hand without them.

Forgot to add that I have a boom kicker, but still have the topping lift in place. I bought it that way and have not seen a reason to remove the popping lift. It does not interfere with my main sail.

Duh, what an idiot I am. Took the boat out over the weekend and discovered why the pulleys and extra line was designed into the Mackpack: loosen the lines and pull the lazy jacks to the goose neck and they're out of the way for raising the main. Tighten them and the sail falls into the bag when dousing.
