Has anyone installed a Lazy Jack system to a 22. I have a 71 catlina 22 that i am slowly tweeking for single handed easy sailing. After the Downhaul that Eric suggested is installed the Jib will be taken care of but that main makes a mess over the cockpit until it is flaked over the boom. So i have been reading up on the lazy jack system that should be less than $100.00 but I would like to hear if others have tried it and if so what were their thoughts. Thanks Herb DayDream

Lazy Jacks

Herb: I installed a lazy jack system on my C22 a few years ago but removed it because it tended to get in the way when raising the sail. I put sail slugs on my sail and made sail slot closures to keep the slugs from comming out when I lower the sail. A sail slot stopper also works well instead of closures. The slugs I used are nylon and hook to the sail using a nylon shackle that goes around the the bolt rope and a screw goes through one side, through the sail and into the other side of the shackle. All of the force is on the bolt rope, I've had these slugs on my sail for at least five years with no problems. Recently I found a web site that shows how to rig lazy jacks that are pulled out of the way for raising the sail and sailing. I also found a site showing the mast slot closures. Unfortunately I can't remember which site they were on so I will give a few that it could be onin a day or so because I am not at home and dont have the addresses here. Lazy Jacks

I haven't used them, but don't see where they are necessary on a C22. Obviously I can't knock them since I haven't tried them though. Do you have sail slugs and the mast gates closed or a stop in place to keep the slugs from falling out when the sail is lowered? I would do that first if you haven't already. Then decide if you still need to bother with lazy jacks. If you keep the boat in a slip or on a mooring I would either make a set of mast gates or buy a set. For more details click the Forum archives list and do a search on the words "mast gates". If you trailer the boat, just a stop would probably be a better compromise. Good Luck, Pete

Web Sites

Herb: Here are the web sites I mentioned in my earlier posting: The mast gates are shown here on the C22 National Association web site: http://www.spiritone.com/~mack/c22/techtips/mastgate/mastgate.htm The retractable lazy jacks are on Ted's C22 repair

lazy jacks

my 88 cat22 came with lazy jacks, not sure if factory extra or previous owner installed. i will be removing them for next season though. in order to have little or no effect on sail shape they must be left loose while sailing. when they are loose and u make a down wind run they have a tendency to wrap around the spreaders, this is a problem when u need to jibe or come about. i was on deck 3 times the last time i was out unwrapping them. i am considering an adjustable topping lift instead to hold the boom up while lowering and raising the sails. good luck, jeff.
