Lazy Jack/Sail Pack with Short Battens?

I'm wanting to get a Lazy Jack Sail Pack combo while trying to save money. Has anyone ever done this without full battens? I've been told that Lazy J's need a full batten but, I'm curious if anyone has tried it without them. Trying to spend 1K not 2 or 3.

I currently have full battens and a lazy bag. Recent recommendations and quotes from different sail lofts are for partial battens.

I don't think batten size matters for using a lazy bag and jacks

I have two full and two partial battens along with the Lazy Jack Bag combo it works fine. Don't see that only having all partial battens would make a difference.

The most important thing is to make sure that when the sail is new you train it to fall into the bag correctly. You need to fold the sail into the bag neatly either with half folds or full folds (depending on size of sail and bag) the first 10 or so times you use it, otherwise the sail will get a bad memory and never work just right.

Yes, it will work. Maybe not quite as nice as the fulls, but both 2+2 combo's work. Semi-fulls, and shorts have all been made and all of the them work.

The condition of your main will also factor. If it is soft and blown out, then it is more likely to fall through. A newer, crispy main with 2+2 will be fine. Also, look at systems with 3 (as opposed to 2) line runs down to each side of the mast. That will give the system more chances to catch the sail.

My Beneteau Oceanis 311 does not have full battens and is set up with a stackpack and lazy jacks as standard equipment. The standard battens are perhaps 3/4 length. It works, although the sail is old and soft at the top so I usually have to pull the last 8' down by hand. I plan to clean out and lube the mast track to see if I can get it working a little more smoothly.

I had the 2 + 2 battens with the stack pack that came on my Ben 31. Hated it! There was nothing wrong with the batten set up and it worked fine, but the bag zipper was hard to reach and it allowed water to get through to the sail. The main ended up having brown stripes at the folds from the water and dirt that got through the cover. Plus, you have the bag sitting on the boom when sailing messing with the flow on the lower portion of the sail.

When the zipper thread rotted from the UV, I switched to a lazy jack set and conventional mainsail cover.

I should have done it two years ago.

I'm in the process of making a "regular" sail cover to replace the 7-year old Lazy Bag for the same reasons you mention. With the Sailrite machine I can custom make the cover, so am keeping the measurements to pass on to other B323 owners.
