In the spirit of Marie Kondo to spark joy in my boat hooks and fenders, I would like to hear your organizational ideas for tidying the junk drawer that is our deck storage (traditionally termed, the lazarette). I have seen boats that are masterworks of organization, with bungees and clips for everything, and even color coding -- that ain't my boat! I've got three unorganized, massive boxes, two of which I could stand upright in. While I am grateful to Catalina for giving me the raw space, I need help in deciding what to keep at-hand, and organizing it.
A guiding principle should be to keep at-hand only what you need at-hand, so that would mean things needed when there is absolutely no time to go below: Spare 3/8" line, small stern anchor, boat hook, fire extinguisher, beer cooler, fenders, radar reflector, deck PFDs, etc? I also keep things that I do not want to store below, such as small propane tanks, fuel stabilizer, dock lines, etc. What other criteria do you use? How do you keep your stuff contained or organized - bins, bungee to the hull, clips? Photo's would be great! I won't share mine, but just imagine putting all the above stuff into a cement mixer for half and hour -- that's what mine looks like.
If anyone wants to delve deeper into tidying as a "lifestyle": https://konmari.com/
