Lavac problem

HI Peggie, I own a Lavac Popular model and it is installed on my sailboat. We have just discovered a crack in the pedestal base about the size of a thumb nail and sort of a multidimensional "crushed" look. Sorry, I do not have a photo to show at this time. This crack is at the top of the pedestal base near the edge, where the base meets the gasket which separates the base from the bowl. Along the top base edge there appears to be some leaking, also. I know it is hard to diagnose this without a photo but I am wondering if you can guess what the extent of the problem could be. When the toilet was installed, it came from the factory already assembled so we have not yet been able to take the toilet bowl off the pedestal to see what the structure inside looks like. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. JPoz

The extent of your problem is a cracked base...

Most likely caused by over-tightening the bolts that attach the bowl to it. I suspect you need a new base...but I suggest you contact these folks to discuss it: http://www.lavac.com/ They're not the factory in the UK, they're US dealer/service center who managed to beat Blake to the punch for the URL.

I wondered about that

Well, I wondered about that..but this is our 3rd season with it and so I thought if the bolts were too tight we would have seen the stress before now. The pedestal came attached from the factory. I contacted the distributor who suggested we try to repair it with PVC glue and if that didn't work to replace the base..problem is that it could take a month to get a replacement base. Thanks for your help. Peggie

So,.. try the glue, order a base...

Most of that month the distributor quoted you to get a new base would be spent in surface transportation from the UK. A base doesn't weight that much...pay a little more for air mail and you should get it in a week. You might also check with the people at the link I gave you to see if they have one...they're in FL. It's not unusual for over-tightened screws/bolts/tank fittings take anywhere from months to years to do their damage...changes in temperature, stresses etc just finally combine to do it. After 3 years, you don't have a warranty claim, but it can still happen.
