I don't know how much thrust, but a slip mate of mine uses a trolling motor for the same purpose with his S2 6.9, which is about the same size as an ODay 23. He said the only problem he has is when the wind absolutely dies and he's up at the other end of the lake, 7 miles away. But he's retired, doesn't mind tossing down the anchor and waiting for a breeze.

45 pound thrust would probably get the job done, but I think I'd want 65 pounds...

picked up a 55 lb thrust Minn Kota last weekend. I'll let you know how it works once I launch the boat.

I'm remembering trying to get in ahead of fast moving storms. We were in our day sailer and out here on the plains of Kansas although we can see the storms in the distance, they are sometimes moving faster and suddenly we need to get in very badly...Our O'Day DS had a beefed up stern and we were able to use a 4 horse johnson and many times we very happy that little overweight motor was on the boat....she was an old johnson...sometimes even on sunny days and the winds are blowing 25 mph dead in our face getting back to the yacht club....2-4 miles away....The same thing could occur at night.....perhaps we were too cautious. I have used a Minn Kota Endura 50 on my O'Day 19 with great success. Top speed is limited to 3 knots due to the propeller pitch. But it is quite adequate for maneuvering around docks and mooring fields.

If the wind gets too strong, the wind may push the bow around faster than the motor can push the stern to compensate.

Beyond that, remember that the Group 24 size battery will not last for more than an hour at full speed.

Make sure the battery is a true deep cycle battery - NOT a dual purpose one.
A pair of golf cart (GC2) batteries will give you 230 amp-hours verses the 70 amp-hours of the Group 24.

But you choice depends on how much you will really use the motor. If you are focused on sailing, the smaller battery may be sufficient.
