In doing some research for PHRF ratings for a request for a Hunter 29.5 owner on a new mainsail, I came to understand that the large roach mainsails that Hunter’s have are penalized not on the sail area, but on the calculated value of the boom (E) to make the roach fit in the formulas. As I discovered, the boom of the 29.5 is actually 150” (E), but the calculated value is 195”, or 130% above what is actual. That gives a nine second penalty for the sail, but it also means that you could actually increase the boom length up to that length without additional penalty. Not that you would extend it out that far, but any extra 12” or so without additional penalty might be worth it in some cases. You would just have to insure that the roach didn’t grow in the MGT measurement (or the specific roach area that caused the calculated E to "grow") to keep the same penalty of 9 seconds. Something to think about…
