Do you use a lanyard for your sailing knife, and if so, what type of lanyard have you found works best?

Yup

Any small cordage will do. I use parachute cord, just large enough loop to make it easy to get on and off, small enough so it will work if you drop the knife. Played with knots to find a suitably nautical looking knot but ended up just tying the ends off with a figure eight.

Since buying my Leatherman Wave 2 seasons past it is now worn on my belt at home as well. I find it indespensible. Two weeks ago I lost a screwdriver over the side and decided it was time to add a lanyard to the Leatherman. The attachment hole on the Leatherman is very small. I attached a string to the knife but didn't like the result so I borrowed a ss. split ring from my swiss army knife and put that in the small hole to which I added a loop of rawhide as used in boot shoelaces. Seems to work fine.

This is an interesting....

...and one that I probably should have included in the "Cutting Edge" item. Yes, I think using a lanyard on your knife is a very good idea. Mine are (I use 2 different knives) long enough to allow me to use the knife with my arm fully extended. As you may have guessed, I have a number of favorite knives, and each seems to have a particular lanyard. The one I like best is a piece of 3/16" 3-strand nylon with eye splices at either end. I do not recommend splicing the loop around the knive cringle/bale as you may want to detach it at some times. I use a plastic clip to attach the knife to the lanyard and then run the other end thru a belt loop and then thru eye splice in that end. Very nautical looking... My other knife has a 1/8" nylon braid that I've used a hangman noose knot on either end to secure the knife to it and for a loop to go through my belt loop. Sorry for the windy reply, but I love this subject....

You might want to choose a lanyard with a strength that will save your knife if you drop it but not hang/catch you if you fall on deck or overboard and the knife hangs up on the boat somewhere?

hangman's noose

I do the same with my Myerchin. It was mentioned earlier, but I must say that the marlin spike has been more of a help in tight spots than the blade. Alan

tomfoolery's

response is why I use a simple loop lanyard to attach the knife to my wrist and not to my belt or belt loop. I want the ability to move my wrist to get free of the knife if necessary and this method permits a very short length of line that doesn't get in the way. But, I also find this an interesting topic and am very open to the possibililty that better ways than mine exist. My outdoor activities have been professional as well as recreational and include more than sailing and I consider a proper knife and accessories an essential tool. Too little attention is given the knife by modern sailors. Most I see don't even carry one.
