Hi, i am restoring an '86 40' Hunter Legend. It had taken on water at one point. The cabin was preserved fairly well, but left in a storage unit that wasnt fully enclosed from the elements. I have almost finished reassembling the cabin interior. The laminate on the walls & shelves in the heads and other areas is paper thin. It is bubbling and peeling. I do not want to use more laminate to fix it. I thought about cutting new pieces out of those water resistant sheets that are kinda like paneling. Maybe its called splash board? but anyway, i dont really want to go through the trouble. I have been working on this boat every weekday since december. I wanna finish!! Can anyone suggest some kind of paint or coating that would be attractive and waterproof? Im thinking I could scrape off the old laminate and paint on a new coat of paint. I dont think garage floor coating would work, im applying it on wood. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

After you have sanded and prime painted with a good bonding primer

The a good porch and deck enamel will serve you well. Try to find one that is Acrylic and urethane based. Apply a couple of coats.

It is NOT laminate!

BR: It is not laminate. The material is melamine. This is a plywood product that has a plastic/vinyl that is bonded to it. Something like formica would be an excellent choice for the head area. If properly applied it can also last for another 20-30 years (and then you will not care). Paint is never going to look as good as a laminate finish and will not hold up as well either.

laminate

In my opinion, Formica brand laminate would be the most durable and attractive solution, but of course it would take longer and cost more.

Laminate will last far longer than the substrate

as will a melamine finish. If the substrate has started to go bad there is not much chance of redeeming it.
