I need sailing info for Lake Travis, Tex. Specifically, I have a free day on my trip there in early Oct. and I'd like to rent a 18-23 ft daysailor. I don't know the exact name of the community I'll be staying in, but it's at the southern end of Lohman's Crossing Rd on the north shore peninsula opposite Lakeway. Other than the lake level being extremely low right now, can anyone tell me good places to sail, best rental locations, weather, etc. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Austin!

You might find some useful information on my website: http://www.texassailor.com From your description, you'll be staying somewhere in Point Venture. Shades cafe is located on the water in the Point Venture marina. A water taxi operates between Lakeway and Shades. The Texas Sailing Academy operates out of the Lakeway marina (http://www.texassailing.com). They offer US Sailing instruction as well as bareboat chartering of their Beneteau fleet (nine ranging in size from the 235 to the 351; also a Hunter 310). Commanders Point marina offers you another charter opportunity (http://www.cpyb.com). One of their boats is a Catalina (C30). Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any rental outfits that offer the smaller daysailors. And, maybe by early October, our temps will have moderated to the mid-90s. We broke the record of 104 today by topping out at 106 at the airport.

Oh, and the weather

You can look at hourly temps and wind at http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KAUS.html Although its been a bit hot lately (like the last 60 days), we've enjoyed decent wind. For example, this afternoon gave us winds of 5 to 15 mph. Much better than the calm conditions that are common during the heat of summer. You can enjoy good sailing between the area just west of Point Venture to Arkansas Bend (mostly beam reaching). Of course, sailing is usually good all the way to the dam. I sail out of Hurst Creek and spend quite a bit of time between Emerald Point Marina and Lakeway.

One more time

The Lakeway marina says that the Texas Sailing Academy does rent boats as small as the 19' Beneteau. I'm not familiar with this model. Is there really a Beneteau this small?
