Travis has...

it's up and downs!!! To say the least...but it's a fabulous lake. In Janurary when I was out there looking, the lake was down 40 ft. and you couldn't even put a boat in. Now it's closed because of flooding, but about to be reopened. I'm moving back to Austin after a 3 year absence and the main problem now is finding a slip. Best sailing marinas are Commander's Point, Marshall Ford, and Yacht Harbour. Riviera and Anderson Mill are ok, but you're a bit large for them. I've sailed Travis over 12 years or more and its a lot of fun if you avoid the big, crazy weekends and can get out during the week. Check out the link provided for phone #'s, etc.

Consider Canyon Lake as Well

Depending on where you live it may not be a long commute. Or going the other way Lake LBJ is nice too.

Honeyman...

...welcome back to Lake Travis! We've had our boat at a little known marina called Keller Marina which is in the same cove as the Austin Yacht Club since 1991 when the lake had its last major flood that destroyed our previous marina. It's quiet and private with few amenities. The docks are 12 feet wide our 30 footer with a 11 and a half foot beam just fits. As far as I know there are several slips available and you might consider this marina as temporary home until the slips at the marina you want to be at are available. Or maybe you'll end up staying as long as we have! Give Bruce a call at 512-266-8635. Oh, all the marinas are a mess right now and until the lake drops down about another 15 feet things won't be normal for two or three weeks from now. That is if it does not rain again!

Lake Buchanan is nice too

When my wife and I lived in Austin, we loved Lake Buchanan. We kept our MacGregor 26X in a little marina on the north side near the end of FM 2341 for about 4 years - loved every minute of it. Many, many times, we'd be the only sailboat on the water on a beautiful summer weekend (while Travis was getting slammed). The only real negative about Buchanan for us was that it was about 45 minutes farther out than Travis from Austin. One important thing to consider about Buchanan, though - when we were there we had a slip-docked trailer sailor, which we launched using a standard ramp. I don't know what marinas (if any) might have the equipment to launch a Hunter 31. Somebody must have the ability, though, because we saw a few bigger sailboats there over the years. Perhaps that is why Buchanan is under-utilized?

Depends on where you live

One thing to note about Lake Travis is that some parts are pretty hard to get to from Austin. I live right on the south end of the lake and am about 45 minutes from downtown in rush hour traffic. My view across the lake, though is likely two hours away even though it is physically closer, because you have to drive around the north end of the lake. My marina, Siesta Shores, has an open sailboat slip right now, but I don't think a 31 will fit. The largest boat in there is a 28 and it sticks out pretty far. Welcome to Austin. See you out on Travis. Jeff 2006 Hunter 25, Cassiopeia

Thanks Monty...

I needed 14x35 and will be at Marshall Ford. I'm familiar with Keller, an unknown jewel to most! Looking forward to getting back to Austin.
