Is there enough wind to sail on Shasta Lake? I've pasted it many, many times and can't remember seeing any sailboats. It's about 4hrs.from where I live,so the drive wouldn't be so bad,if I were to spend a week. What exit would you take to get you down to the water,to get your boat in the water, and for leaving your rig and trailer. It's getting to be that time of year,so to all, happy sailing. no Shasta, yes Whiskeytown

Shasta tends to be mainly a power boat lake. Its very hot in summer and not conducive for wind. Try nearby Whiskeytown Reservoir, its cooler and much better wind. If that doesn,t work drive a little further past Lassen National Park to beautiful Lake Almanor.Elevation is 4500ft. and there is usually afternoon breeze.

Second for Whiskytown

I'd agree with going to Whiskytown over Shasta. Shasta has a lot of clay soil which would be a real mess to track into the boat and this time of the year the water level starts going down. Whiskytown is much more like a lake than a reservoir. Shasta is more of a houseboat and water ski lake. For a 21 footer, though, what about going to somewhere with more room, like the Columbia? A week out near Astoria would give one lots of new places to go and probably some sandy beaches. We have a 16ft daysailer that we sailed the length of Lake Tahoe with in one afternoon and thats about 40 or 45 miles. Even a fairly large lake can wind up seeming small. Whiskytown, on the other hand, would be great for just gunkholing.

Tahoe or Whiskytown

Jim, I too am interested in Shasta, and/or Whiskytown. Don't know if you are on the list for the Mac "float-in" at Lake Tahoe this fall. Seems a bunch of Calif guys have done it in the past, and are planning on doing it again this Summer I understand. I live in Gold Beach if you want to be put on the email list for dates, email me at mbechelb@carrollsweb.com I'll give you the info on who to contact.
