We are considering changing ports to Lake Pepin. Any pros/cons regarding this lake? We know Lake City Marina has a 5-year waiting list, but there is another marina nearby (Hanson Harbor), they plan to add dockage, so may have some space available. We are currently on Lake Waconia - great lake, but the weeds are choking us. Any information would be appreciated.

We are in Lake City

We have been in Lake City for the past 7 seasons. Biggest marina on the entire miss. river. Over 500 boats and a 5yr wait. Figure it out. We like lake city alot. Nice small town, close to mpls , but far enough away to feel like you went some place. The winds can blow pretty hard on the river and will chase you back home. But the views are beautiful and def. more area to sail than waconia.

Bigger Lake vs More Drive TIme

I have had my H26 on Waconia for several years, but have sailed my old 22 and the H26 on Pepin. Pepin is nice, much larger, but is definitely not as convenient a place to daysail if that is what you do primarily. I think Waconia has better water to swim in, and this year is the first year where weeds/milfoil has been a big problem. The decision is really needs to do be made on what type of sailing experience you, or family are looking for. Both places have their pluses and minuses. Dan's Pepin Marina

We've been at Dan's for three years. A year prior to that we were at Hanson's. L.Pepin is a great sailing lake, sometimes crowded with sailboats but rarely a problem with power boats. Rarely a day with insufficient winds. We looked at all three marinas and i can give you an opinio. Realize it, though, as an opinion. I may like things much different than you. Hanson's has the best location of all, secluded, far from the train tracks, very little traffic, and uncroweded sailing always available at the upper end of the lake. The ships store is excellent; most any supplies and hardware can be found and most any work can be done there. The facilities are shabby; don't walk bare foot on the docks; Showers utilitarian; no place to retreat on a hot or rainy day. Dan's Pepin marina is very nicely equiped; reasonable yacht club for $190/year; minimal ships store; train track very close; Dan very helpful; fair amount of transient traffic. Pepin is small but delightful. Three restruants and a coffee shop give a ice variety. Some arts and crafts type shops are nice. Quiet shade lined streets nice for early morning walks if you're an early riser while the crew sleeps in. We have not used Lake City, but talking with the manager and the previous owner of the restruant overlooking the marina, it seems big and noisy; party type noise; When at Hanson's we frequently had trouble finding an open eating place in lake City. In my opinion: Dan's is the nicest marina. Hanson's is the nicest location. Lake City is the nicest clup type social spot. Pepin is the nicest of the two towns. We like Dan's the best. Our bias, had you not noticed, is toward quiet and low populated surroundings. Where ever you chose, you will enjoy. email me if questions. kloster@win.bright.net. Geoff

Go to Lake Superior

Go to Lake Superior. I'm at Barkers Island in Superior, WI. Plenty of spaces and a nice marina. Slip price about half of the Lake Pepin marina. I'm in Edina and it takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours to drive but it's worth it. Plenty of good sailing in the channels or open Lake. Send an email to "ramcork@cs.com" with your phone number and I'll be happy to chat with you. If you do decide to go there, please let me and the marina know since they'll give me a finders fee.
