Just got my first 22' O'day. Her name is Therapy. First year sailing, so i'm sure I won't be going any time soon, but I was wondering if its is: A: A good Idea to run a crossed to the Bass islands. B: Challenging and Fun to go to the islands. C: Good practice for a professional racer. D: Suicide?

Welcome fellow 22'er.
Trailoring you can get pretty close and sure, with some proper preparing you can have an excellent time. I'm planning on taking a small trip there this summer. It's about 65 miles for me here in Cleveland. It can get pretty crowded up there, so if you're overnighting you might want to try weekdays.

We did that trip last year, about this time, in our 19' boats, starting from Leamington (Ontario, Canada)

It was a good trip. Being in a smaller boat, we have to be a bit more aware of the weather, and prepared to abort or change destination if the weather is forecast to be threatening. Also, we were doing a 'guy' sail, so we were up for inclement weather. For a family, you might be more choosy about the conditions.

Going from Pelee Island to Put-in Bay, the forecast was for 20 - 25 kt and rain, and the waves were in the 3' to 5' range, but we dressed for it, we had PFDs and harnesses, we reefed the mains and used standard jib, and we had an exhilarating yet safe journey. The other days were breezy, but nicer weather.

With planning, I'm sure you can successfully make the trip.

It shouldn't be a problem going to the Bass Islands or Kelly's for that matter. You need to pick the right weather window. Launch the boat at the public ramp in Sandusky or Marblehead. Be sure to have proper chart and avoid the Bay Point sandbar in Sandusky Bay. For a first timer go around Ballast Island when approaching PIB from the east. Tip= The best dock location for a boat your size is the State docks at the west end of PIB. Cheap, quiet, and a great view. If the wind is forecasted for 15knots and above from the N, NW, NE this trip can be pretty rough in a 22 footer..

Great fun, never too far from safe harbor. PIB is the only place I've ever been on the Great Lakes where we could sleep on deck and not have any bugs. It was delightful.

Go for it!

Go for it! I did it in my Hunter 170 a few years ago from Catawba State park ramp. My first South Bass circumnavigation. Now I take my Precision 23 over to PIB whenever I can, or out to Kellys to anchor on the north side & play on the beach. As others have said, the weather can be a deal breaker, but it's more predictable than some would have you believe. I find the area between Marblehead and Kellys to be extra choppy on weekends. You can anchor out in front of the monument at PIB and radio the water taxi for $5 till midnight.
