I am planning on sailing Lake Erie this summer from Pt Maitland to Sandusky (Cedar point) Obvious stops at Leamington, Pelee and Put in Bay. Are there any other suggestions? Looking at the map the distance from Long Point to Port Stanley is a loong way without anything in between. Would I be better to head to Eire PA and then up. Winds are typically SSW through July and Aug.

Cruise ideas

Hi Len, We're just "up the street" at Port Rowan. The Long Point area is definitely worth a visit but it is a long haul from Port Maitland. We were looking at it from the other way around - to sail from Long Point to Pelee for the LEER cruise. Think we'll trailer to Leamington instead. When are you thinking of cruising this summer? It would be fun to meet up at the tip of Long Point, or at Dover for foot longs etc.

OK, so give us some hints

Hi Chris and Lenore, Lake Erie is one place the Admiral and I are planning to visit with our saiboat. We no longer have a Mac but sail something a little bigger now so we can avoid the sloop stoop. That said, we'd all like to hear some thoughts on cruising lake Erie, for one week, or two or three. Good places to make port, places to avoid etc. Can we bug you for a few paragraphs like that? Where to put in, where one can have a mast lifted and great marinas on the South side, some on the North shore too while you're at it. Best regards, and send your autograph please, Steve Paul

Sorry Chris & Lenore I basically posted to my original instead of making the reply to you. See above posting with photo in the thread. I noticed the commands at the bottom after I submitted

Len Thanks

Looks like the girls have that boat shipshape while the captain sits on his duff. Nice work looks very comfortable and ready. Enjoy your summer on the lake. Steve P.

Cruise ideas

We haven't seen most of Lake Erie (yet). The Long Point area has provided more than enough "gunk-holing" opportunities over the past two summers. Our longer cruises have always involved trailering somewhere else. That's one reason we are looking forward to the LEER cruise in June (think it's the weekend of June 23, but we'll make it a 4 day weekend). We have also looked across the lake from the tip of Long Point and seen how close Erie is - have to cross one of these days... You should consider joining the Trailer Sailors for the annual North Channel cruise in July. Once you get bitten by the NC bug, it's difficult not to go back each year. http://www.trailersailors.org Chris

The Leer cruise

The LEER cruise started with an idea/thread over on the trailersailor.com forum. I think it originated as a northern conuterpart to BEER? It stands for "Lake Erie Exploratory Rendevous". Anyway, a guy named Rory started a thread, proposed the weekend of June 23/24 and people started saying "I'll go". It will be a cruise of the western islands of Lake Erie, starting on the US side and heading north as far as Pelee Island. A group of Canadians (us included) are talking about putting in at Leamington and heading south to meet the group at Pelee or one of the islands further south. That's it so far - just an idea that seems to be taking off. We'll definitely be going. Probably take the Friday and Monday to make it a four day weekend. I'll attach a link to the forum thread so you can read up on it. Chris

LEER

Sounds like a blast! I will mention it to my wife and we might be able to do something too! She might be interested in something like this. Leamington to Pelee is not that far and seeing other trailor sialors and Mac owners to swap ideas would be great.

Customs I68 Card

Thanks for the web site link This looks real good!! Basically last year we did alot of sailing in Canadian waters and the last time I crossed to Erie Pa from Port Dover a few years ago all that was required was a telephone call. I guess things are a bit more complex now! Anyway the questions I have are If I obtain an I 68 card does this mean I call the first entry and subsequent entries are allowed for periods up to 72 hrs provided I don't stray 25 miles from my boat inland and I do not have to report on later entries? If I go the passport route I ahve to reprot each time I enter the US. Is this correct? or do you ahve to reprot via the visual phone each time no matter what you have? Where in Canada can I obtain an I 68 Someone told me Port Colburne? I will definitely liek to get this before my 10 week sail back and forth!
