Can't speak for the Sandusky area, but mid to late afternoon in the Toledo - Monroe, Michigan area it got quite windy. We went out around 10:30 to try to miss the rains and storms that were predicted later. Winds were in the mid to high teens. On our way back in around noon we had about 15 minutes of torrential rain, while it was totally dry on shore at North Cape.
After we got back to our dock we had lunch while we waited for the weather fronts to move through. While waiting we heard that one of the boats doing the Perry Race had lost its mast.
Around 2:30 all the dark clouds and rain had passed through so we decided to go for another sail. As we were backing out of our dock we had around 10 to 12 knots of wind. By the time we reached open water the winds were in the low 20s and builing. Most of our sail was in the high 20s, with several extended gusts to around 33 knots. By this point there were only about 3 other boats out, and no fishing boats.
On the way home we saw no evidence of fallen trees or wind damage.
