Hello, I'm seeking a boat of about 22 feet, nothing too huge, but not too small to spend a few nights on. I really like the looks of the Macgregor 22 and that boat is the primary boat that I'm searching for. (See attached Craigslist link for what I'm looking for). I got a call from a guy with a Laguna 24 that he wants to sell for an upgraded boat. I haven't looked at the boat yet (he's gone this week for the holidays). I've found a few sites on the boat, but not a whole lot of information on the web about it. It sound like it's a match for what I'm looking for, but I just wonder about the displacement of the boat. I'll be towing with a V6 Ford Ranger truck, so I don't want to go too heavy. I have also been in contact with the owner of a Catalina 22, but yes....again I'm wondering about weight of this one also. I won't be towing far, less than 2 miles to the launch from home, but I still want to be able to get it out of the water without spinning my truck wheels! Advice? Tom

C22

A C22 will weigh in at about 2500lbs. Add the trailer and some gear and you are around 3500+ I would think the Ranger could handle it for the short distance, especially if it is 4WD. I don't know much about the McGregor except that there are quite a few at our club and the owners like them. The nice thing about a C22 is that there is a lot of them so you can get parts and support.

C22/Laguna24 weight

Yeah, that sounds about right from what I've read about the C22. My truck is the 2WD Ranger with the 3.0 liter V6 engine. I took some stuff to the dump recently, so I had a chance to weigh the truck. It's just about right on 4,000 lbs, so I think I'm still better off with the Macgregor 22 which is 1,800lbs without trailer. From what I have seen, boats seem to gain about 200lbs per additional foot. I think my quest will continue for the Macgregor 22.... Tom

Towing a Catalina 22

Hello, I spent July - November trailer sailing a Catalina 22. I towed it with a Honda minivan. The distance from my house to the marina is about 10 miles. Towing was OK, not fun, and not something I would like to do on a regular basis, but it really was fine. I'm sure that for a short distance, and not too often, your Ranger would be fine for towing. If you plan on spending nights aboard, get the biggest boat you can find / tow / afford. Good luck, Barry Barry Lenoble Curragh, 1986 O'day 35 Mt. Sinai, NY lenoble@optonline.net

would be the best to tow. When the boat is on the trailer measure the distance from the bottom of the boat to the pavement. The boat with the least distance will be the easiest to launch. The greater the distance the more you will have to back into the water at the launch ramp. With 2wd I wouldn't want to back any more than I had to. You can check relative performance of the boats you are interested in here: http://www.image-ination.com/sailcalc.html For additional information call Blue Water Yachts on Lake Union. They are extremely helpful and may be able to find one of the boats for you.

Tide

Oh, as for towing out at low tide....I plan on launching at a lake where there is no tide - I can reach salt water from there if I want. So my ramp should always be the same depth and sliminess. Tom
