Lady J, week nine, she's taking on a new look.

A very busy week at the yard. Lady J's hull is pretty much ready for wet in, even if it rains. The stain is done and there's a coat of CPES over it to keep rain from leaching out and streaking it. After she's wet in, we'll apply 12 coats of varnish over it, above the waterline.

We've also been working inside and in the bilge, detailing it out.

Aft under the cockpit (there's a bit of cleanup and detail there yet to do since Twan got a bit carried away with the paint....



We'll swap out the thru hulls and install new packing before she goes in the water next Friday for an over the weekend soak. We also have to strip the floors and apply the teak and holly ply so there's much yet to do.

You've been busy! Lady J is going to be spectacular but I'm glad it's not me doing 12 coats of varnish!

It won't be so bad. You don't varnish a boat with a 2 inch brush and he does have some help. Biggest concern will be catching the runs before they dry. Sanding between coats and tack ragging will probably take as much time as brushing on the varnish.

Yep, I'll be spraying the varnish. I'll be running around with tape looking for sags here and there. With varnish, you can wait until it seems dry, find a run, apply tape to it and lift the excess varnish off. Then it's fairly easy to come back right before the next coat and block it smooth. We'll block sand it every three or four coats. Once we lay on varnish we won't use any grit higher than 400 and I'll use 800 for the final sanding. I hate seeing sanding scratches in my varnish mirror........

Charlie , I love that tape and runs method. The surface dries to the touch but because it is too thick it isn't dry underneath and will lift off. probably works with paint also. Thanks.

It works with some paints but not all. It also depends on applied film thickness. If it's a heavy coat, you're screwed as far as paint goes. Easier to let it dry, block it down and do the old touch up and buff... If it's Awlgrip or another hard paint, you're just SOL...

I have always used a card scraper on runs. They seem to cut the lumps before they start on the good paint.

Any good masking tape will do, the green is best. Wait until the paint/varnish is not tacky, lay the tape over along the run, keeping the tape edges off the surface. Apply pressure directly on the run with your fingertip and try to smooth it flat a bit. Yank the tape off.
