As I have said earlier, the inside cabinets took a beating this season.

I spotted a set of 12 color "lacquer" sticks with a burn in knife and was wondering how these are used and would they be appropriate for doing touch-ups to the wood finish on our interior boat cabinets? I'm trying to avoid using wax touch up pencils.

Toothpick used as a 'brush' and thinned varnish also works well. Just 'build up' the amount you need in the dings, etc.

Small "dings" can be raised with steam. One way to do that is to wet a soft cloth, like an old t-shirt, fold into about four layers, then just touch that spot with the tip of a household iron to create steam.

If you put any pressure on the iron tip, you might soften the varnish there, and disturb the finish. Should that happen, let it cool and re-harden, then smooth very gently with very fine wet & dry paper lubricated with boiled linseed oil. Wipe off the oil often to see how you're doing.

There are some very good rubbing oils used in gunstock finishing. Check a company called Brownell's in Iowa. Tru Oil is one that comes to mind.

On gunstocks, it's common to rub gently with 0000 steel wool, or a felt pad using linseed oil and rottenstone powder.

You're just looking to restore the gloss finish, no more. If you want a really fine finish, check the products at Constantine Co. They have oils that will restore a piano finish, if you have time and patience.

Patience will be your friend.

Practice burning in on some pieces of scrap.
Temperature and maintaining the right temperature of the burn in knife is vital.
Touch-ups will be invisible with this method.
