Lack of Traveler on 336

I am looking at a 336 and am seriously considering it as a "middle" choice between a 92 33.5 and 97 340. Would appreciate any insight you might care to give between the models other than price. Strike prices for the three are: 92 33.5 around $55k (poorest maintained); 95 336 around $66k and 97 340 around $78K (best maintained). My biggest concern with the 336 is it's lack of a traveler. How well can you adjust sail trim with a single point verses a traveler? Can the boat be equipped with a bimini? How cluttered is the cockpit? I have seen at least on 336 that had a traveler over the companion way. Can this modification be made on an aftermarket basis? Any idea how expensive? Is it worth it? Sure would appreciate some comments. Thanks Mark

Mark, I have a 336 with a travler I did not even know that they made on without it. So it can be done. I don't know cost but any boat catalog should be able to give you a ball park idea.I would guess less then $500 total. Yes the 336 can have a bimini (mine does)It also has a connector from the bimini to the dodger that comes in handy. The cockpit is large and I don't find it cluttered but that is more of a personal thing as to how much junk you have about you at any given time. I do know that it is larger then other boats in the 32 to 34 foot range. It sounds like you can't go wrong with any of the boats, they are all the basic same hull with some differences in the interior and some small difference in the rigging. Another thought just came to mind about the traveler some were rigged on the sterring console. Was there one there and maybe removed? I think it would be a pain there but maybe a techinaly better location as it is at the rear of the boom,I would still opt for the companion way location. Good Luck! Pete

Pete, I thinkk you are the exception rather rule!

Pete, I think you have the optional upgrade. Most every 336 I have seen except for one has had the single shackle point at the console, or a little 12" traveler on the console (which I also thought was kinda dumb). So while agree with you that it's more efficient at the end of the boom, than at the companionway as your boat has, the question remains to others out there, if there is a single point, how does that affect sail trim, cockpit clutter and us of a bimini. Ladies and Gentlemen, I think this issue basically decides if we strike at this 336, so I’d again appreciate comments. Mark
