Hi all, Am about to embark on a two week cruise from Western LI Sound out to Eastern Long Island and Peconic Bay through July 4th week... Was wondering if making overnight reservations for transient slips and moorings along the way is necessary, or are there usually transient accommodations available out there....other than maybe on July 4th itself. As I lay out the course and the stops we will be trying to make along the way, its pretty clear that predicting precisely which harbor we'll be putting into each day is kind of tough. I'm thinking using a cell phone to call ahead each day to scope out accommodations is going to be the way to go... And, if we get stuck without accommodations here and there, we can always just drop the hook as a fall back. We plan to do a couple of nights on the hook anyhow... Anyhow, inputs welcome... Thanks, Jim

Westbrook, CT

We're in Westbrook at Brewers Pilots Point Marina. They have 800+ slips, so they usually have some empty slips available. Brewers has its own system among its various yards that probably gives priority to other Brewers customers. If nothing is available, there's always anchoring at Duck Island. Have fun!

Suggestions

Brewer's Marina's

If you stay at a Brewer's, they will call ahead to other Brewer's marinas to make reservations for you. They usually have some clout with the others. On you trip be sure to stop in the Peconic Bays between the forks. Greenport (Brewer's) is nice with shuttle service to town. Or rent a car for the day (Rent-a-wreck) and visit the winweries on the North Fork. West Neck harbor on Shelter Island is nice on the hook as well as Coechles Harbor (sp?) on Shelter. Be careful with the currents in Plum Gut at the tip of the North Fork. Enjoy it. Sorry I can't make it this year.

Picozzi's also for Shelter Island

They're in Dering Harbor (across from Greenport). Very sheltered, quiet place to sleep and just a ferry ride across from the fun in Greenport.

Thanks For The Inputs

Thanks all for the inputs. My sense is that planning stops and checking in with marinas enroute will be a day by day thing. Thanks for the recommendations.. Jim "Sojourn"

L I Sound Transient . . .

As others have said I would reccomend any Brewers yard. That week in particular is a pretty popular vacation week (I will be out there crusing around too). So I would reccomend reservations. Before we moved our boat out to mystic 6 years ago, we used to keep it at City Island. On our annual trips east to Watch Hill and byond, we always stayed at Cedar Island Marina at Clinton Ct. It is a nice marina, most ammenities, conviently located (about half way between CI and WH, And, their transient dock (F dock) is a couple of hundred feet long and docking is as easy as pulling up to a fuel dock. Some more choices...

Don't know where you are starting from in Western LI, but Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbor are nice, Norwalk Islands, are also nice. There is Cove Marina, and also a town dock that you can stay at for free I think. It is within walking distance to about a dozen restaurants, and the Maritime Center. Milford harbor is nice. There are several spots to stay. Port Jefferson as mentioned before you can anchor, pickup a mooring or dock at Danfords. The Thimble Islands off of branford are beautiful. Pay close attention to your charts going in(lots of rocks), once you are there it's GREAT! Have a great time.

Norwalk town dock is great, but its really for

designed for a few hours dockage. Though, yes, you can stay overnight. The real problem is the limited space and 1st come, 1st served so it can get crowded on nice weekend afternoons....though it usually clears up in the later afternoon/evening. SoNo (South Norwalk) is a great little area with bars and restaraunts just 100 yards from the town dock. There is no electricity and there is a nominal fee, but the dock master that runs it is SO nice. Its probably 50 cents a foot for 1/2 day and $1/foot overnight. Also, if you are going on a weekend, be sure to call ahead and make sure there are no festivals going on (Splash/Jazz/Oyster festival)...because I think the dock is closed for special events those weekends.
