Bog, Tennessee River Navigation Charts will help with the navigation. It has been a while since I purchased any from them, but Lighthouse Landing used to sell the larger, tabletop, charts for KY Lake at a reasonable price, < $10.00 ea. (You will need two for the area I am referring to.) The dam is near milepost 23 and the Eggners Ferry Bridge is just short of milepost 42. That is over 20 statute miles for sailing, plus there are a number of bays that will give you safe anchorage for an overnight stay. Most of the bays will have a mud bottom; think flooded corn fields. However, there are some areas with residual tree stumps. This makes it good for fishing, but you might want to consider using a trip-line on your anchor. Also, just south of the bridge, on the west side, "Up Stream on the Left Descending Bank" is the Kenlake Marina. They have a restaurant as well as fuel and ice. There are other similar facilities in the area; this just happens to be the one I am most familiar with.
Gettinthere, to help you understand Lake Pool and water depths: "All" of the elevations shown on the charts are referenced to sea level. So, if the lake is at normal "POOL" the surface of the water is at 359 ft. If the under water terrain is 350 ft. then there is 9 ft. of water. If the lake level is below normal pool, say at winter pool as it is now, the lake elevation is around 355 ft., looking at the underwater terrain in the same spot you now have only 5 ft. of water. Yes. the level of the lake does change daily, but usually it is not at such an extreme to give you concern. I hope this helps.
