Anyone know of a good inexpensive knotmeter for sailboats that ACTUALLY measures from 0 to say 15 knots. Years ago on my fathers boat we had a clear plastic tube with knots marked on it. Seemed to work well enough. I haven't seen them around anymore.

What is good? What is inexpensive?

Chuck: There are plenty of good products on the market. What are you looking for?

GPS

While perhaps not the cheapest solution, a handheld GPS is by far the most accurate and versitle "knotmeter you could possibly buy.

knotstick.com

Hi Chuck, I ordered the Knotstick for $40 from their web site at knotstick.com. It works very well for measuring speed through the water. I use GPS for Speed over ground. Fair winds, Tom

One more use for knotstick

is to calibrate the knot meter! Seriously -- compare the numbers on the meter with the knotstick and make the adjustments. It's independent of tide or current, and after a few iterations at different speeds, your knotmeter should be just about dead on.
