Is the knot speed indicator at the front? If so,is it a paddle wheel? Can I clean it to make it work?

What symptoms do you have? (Low readings, 0 knots, etc?) Our 28 has a paddle wheel style sender under the front part of the starboard setee. It can get dirty and read low, but we've also had to replace the pin that the paddle spins around as it wore out and resulted in very low readings. The one other thing you could try if the readings are just slightly low is an adjustment screw on the back of the display unit.

Over the years I have encountered several knot meter impellers that did not turn freely because the axle (pin, mentioned above) was bent due to an impact with some object in the water. The impeller can be removed from inside the boat (if out of water, or VERY QUICKLY and DECISIVELY if in the water, and you have a PLUG) the axle (pin) pushed out, and replaced. Sometimes the pin is still straight but gunked up. So yes, a cleaning is in order. Keep in mind - pulling the impeller while in the water will cause a 1.5" diameter column of water to enter the boat until the plug is in. Courage!
