The Data Marine Knot Meter on our (new to us this year) '81 30' works fine until we restart the engine then it goes blank. The fix is to reboot the Knotmeter. The previous owner says it has always been that way. The power for the unit is off the DC Main Breaker. The Data Marine Depth Meter is off the same lug and does not exhibit this trait. Any ideas?

Troubleshooting idea

I can't say I know what is causing your problem, but you might be able to narrow it down with this: If the 2 guages are next to each other, seap the power and ground wires, and see if the problem moves. If the problem moves, then it is in the wiring, if it stays then it is in the guage, and you should call Data Marine and see what they say. Hope this helps!

sorry

Sorry, I ment "swap" the cables, not "seap" the cables. Darn fat fingers!

Use a different power source.

Dennis: If it is not too much trouble, you may want to move the power source to a seperate breaker. I have an idea that the Starter is taking a LOT of juice (50-100 amps) and there is some circuitry in that gauge that is shutting down. The other one probably has different criteria. I do not think that it is a good idea to have anything but the starter on the main breaker anyway. If you have a Yanmar manual it will tell you how many amps the starter takes (not that you care). I like Freds idea first no matter if you seap or swap the wires. If you have the manual from the mfg, you may also check to see what they recommend. We have ALL of our instruments and autopilot on a single breaker.
