I am experiencing an annowing knocking sound in the aft port section of my 1999 Hunter 420. I thought it was something in the port locker located on the swim platform but I could not find the problem there. Any ideas?

Tell us more

When does it occur - can I assume that it is when the engine is running. Is it worse at certain times. Any additional information will help.

If you've changed props

If its when your under power, you can get a similar knock or whopping sound if you've increased prop size and there is insufficient clearance between the prop and hull. The prop doesn't strike the hull, but the sound can be caused by cavitation.

could be rubbing of headliner against the

I had a similar problem on my 340. The source of the noise was a section of the headliner rubbing against the deck. The region was right behind the fuel tank. On my boat there is a plywood panel at the stern end of the aft berth. This panel can be easily removed. By having a friend step on the deck in the right place I was able to go below and isolate the source of the noise. The noise was stopped by stuffing a rag between the deck and the headliner. After a while the rag slips and I have to re-stuff it. I took photos of the 340s in construction at the factory and if you like I can email you a photo that identifies the problem area on my boat. o
