ah the magic of haul-outs!

Found out that my kiwi prop is significantly undersized the boat and explains high rpm/low speed and issues into turning the boat into high winds in small quarters that i've been having. I will send pics later.

I know each max-prop is set-up specially, but for those of you who have one on your 40.5 -- any issues? and what is the diameter size? 3 or 4 blades?

starting strut work today...

Thanks
Frederick

Frederick. For the first time I cannot answer a question on my beloved Max Props. I don't know if a three or four bladed prop would be better. I have the feeling that the three is better balanced.

Do you know that Max prop now comes in a version that sets itself to optimum blade? The main office in the U.S. for Max Props is in Lynnwood (WA). Give them a call and they can answer all your questions. A really nice group of people.

David Gerr's book "The Propeller Handbook" would answer all of your questions. I paid only 14$ for a paperback version last month. Nigel Calder's "Cruising Handbook" has a chapter that summarizes some of David Gerrs equations and graphs. Calder also provides a set of sequence steps for performing the calculations. It isn't very difficult to figure prop dimmensions once you know such things as: shaft HP, gear reduction, propeller aperture size, 1/4 beam width measured on the waterline, depth of the propeller, shaft RPM, and a few other things. Gathering some of the parameters values may require the boat to be out of the water.

Even if you plan to talk to a professional (i.e. a naval architect or prop manufacturer) it is helpful to know ball-park figures as a double-check.

You can re pitch kiwi blades. You can also buy bigger kiwi blades.
