Kiwi recommends using a high quality marine grease eg Shell Nautilus Marine Grease - NLGI No. 2. I understand this is lithium based grease. Not sure where I could find the Shell product. My local marine store just had the stuff for wheel bearings. What does NLGI No. 2 mean? Can you guys recommend a similar product. Thanks.

Pat, a good lithium or lithium/calcium based grease rated for marine use will be OK.. The NLGI number is a measure of how thick the grease is but not necessarily how well it is formulated for a specific performance. Since you are in fresh water, a "trailer bearing" grease is probably sufficient .. The thing ya want is corrosion protection.. and great lubricity.. Lubriplate, Amsoil, Mobil, Chevron, Shell, etc. all make marine greases in the NLGI 2 thickness.. There are conventional ones and there are synthetic based lubes..
call a "jobber" in your area who represents Shell, and he can probably tell you where you can find the exact grease you are looking for. If not, he'll have a cross reference to an equivalent in another brand.
Tribologists are the folks who are the experts in this stuff !
