KISS head intake vented loop?

Hi,

As you probably know already, I am putting in my new head system.
I am doing the KISS system like many of you have done. It will be a lot like Peter's when done.

I purchased the Jabsco compact head the other day. I purchased the least expensive model with the theory that if anything serious goes wrong - toss it and buy another one.

My question is on the Jabsco toilet.
They show a vented loop on the input side of the toilet when the toilet is below the water line. They specifically request that you take off the pipe that goes from the hand pump output to the top-back of the bowl, and replace it with the long loop. They don't want you to put it between the intake water valve and the toilet pump - which would be much more convienient (just loop up through the hanging locker to forward of the head compartment).

Our head is kind of half above and half below the non-heeled waterline.

Do we need this loop in our boat? Has anyone else with the KISS system not put in this loop and not had any problems?

I have been revisiting my choice of toilet just now and have been thinking about the Lavac.

The reason Jabsco wants the loop after the hand pump is so you are not sucking a vacuum in the hose that contains the anti-siphon valve. The sucking action would open the valve and you would just get air and not the flush water you desire.

With the lavac, you wouldn't be able to have an anti-siphon valve anywhere in the input line because of the way the toilet operates. The pumping out of waste also creates a vacuum at the intake and sucks in the flush water. If you had the anti-siphon valve in there, it would let air into the bowl instead of flush water.

Am I thinking correctly? Is the intake vented loop not required with the lavac for below waterline toilet installations?

I just talked to the Lavac distributor (Scott 800-544-2132).
Turns out I am correct about the lavac operation.

To solve this they also have the vented loop, but, they do it differently. They have a very small opening that lets the toilet overpower the small vent when it needs water. But the valve lets in air when the toilet is not in use.

If I could get one of these valves, I might be able to continue with my installation and put the vented loop at the intake valve.

I have no vented loops in the water intake system.
We ALWAYS close both thru hulls directly after use.

I also keep the valves closed. Same as Peter. Part of the KISS
system.

The Jabsco head can be adapted to pump from either side, with a
simple disassaembly/reassembly procedure. I don't know about the
Lavac.
Anyway, remember this is a 'KISS' system. The fewer widgets and loops
you have the better it will work. You can always make a modification
or two after it's installed, if you have problems.
Most important is that all aboard know to keep the valves shut when
not in use. With ball valves it's easy to see their status by the
position of the handle ... not so with the old gate valves.

I am sitting here at work and there is a very nice breeze to go with a cool bright sunny day here, and that's all I can think about.

I have to second what Steve said. I bought an old (398) Vega and as
much as I want to get it looking great the main aim is to GO SAILING.
So, she may look a little worse for wear, but as long as she is safe
and can sail I'll put up with the unfinished electrical system,
peeling paint, beligured cockpit locker lids, worn dodger, half
installed head, unfinished plumbing, .............

Well, I can handle lots of things...
I have wires hanging down from the mast, I have junk strewn around...

But you just can't fully enjoy the experience until you can let a monster loose in the terlit.
