I was reading on the all sailors forum about the shift cable failing and how to stop the boat. My 33 with the Yanmar Q15 doesn't have a "kill engine switch". Has anyone put one on this engine? and how did you do it? Thanks,

It's just the engine shut off. Some diesels are equipped with a key-activated solenoid so that it works just like a gas-engine ignition switch. Others have a cable-operated lever that shuts off the fuel. Rick D.

You don't have and don't need one.

As you know, the Yanmar 2QM15, does not have an engine kill switch. To shut down this engine you just retard the throttle until it dies. This works OK until you stall the engine while docking. I also lost my shifter cable one day, just as I was pulling into my slip and did not have reverse. The ball fitting broke away from the cable on the transmission end. It was only a small bump since we do not fly full speed into our marina and slip as do some of our more macho sailing buddies.

Fine. It doesn't have a kill switch, but,...

...what do you do when the cable fails as mine did last year? This is a problem when heading into the slip. I forced the transmission into neutral. Can a kill switch be installed? I also don't like the fact that if you throttle down too far the engine will shut off when in fact you're trying to idle.
