I cannot get the brake to release and was wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem. I have tried to get the screws out so I could take the frame apart but they seem to be locked down and I am unable to get them to out. Any suggestions???????

Penetrating Oil + Shocik

Jennie: Put lots of penetrating oil on bolt/nut or any screws (if you cannot find penetrating oil, use WD-40). Keep doing this for maybe a week, and occasionally tap (moderatley hard) the locking bolt with a small hammer with pressure to unscrew it. On screws, tap the end of the screwdriver downward hard as you are trying to unscrew. If that doesn't work after a couple of weeks, then screws could probably be drilled out. RK

thanks

Thanks. I am using PB Blaster. That has worked before. I am a little nervous as I just purchased the rudder. I will talk to the owner tonight. Do you know if the half moon pieces on each side of the rudder housing are suppose to turn. I know there is a screw that goes through the head of the rudder, but I am not sure how the rest of the brake works..

The half moon pieces

They don't turn. The only thing that turns is the rudder itself and the tightening lever. This lever squeezes the plates against the rudder's sides. The sides also have a small SS bump on one side that will fit into a hole when the rudder is down. Check this hole when you get it apart. If the hole is rounded on the inside of the plates, the rudder will need excessive force to hold it down. This is not good. Also not particularly good if you have cracks in the edges of the rudder. It should be sealed from water intrusion. No cracks. Please see the link below that was not posted in the earlier post. http://catalina22fleet20.home.comcast.net/~catalina22fleet20/techtips/rudder.htm
